So it looks like that tree cutting I shared in another thread may have to find a new wall to hang on. Today I found this painting and it looks great in the same spot.

There doesn't seem to be any signature, though I didn't remove it from the frame.

I'd appreciate (once again!) any of your excellent opinions on it, re: quality, age, if it's French, etc.

    Thank you again.

One internet source says Cousin Frères was active 1900-1930. This looks like it might have been an earlier mark.

here's a case where the nails are turning color.....so the staples.....which I like to use as an age indicator ....were a later addition , only to tack down the excess canvas...

    .

I appreciate that! Thanks for the comment.

Most of the pictures / art / tree cuttings ;) on the walls in my house are nature and the outdoors, so this painting fits right in with the others.

Shame no signature. Have you looked under the frame for one?

At some point the supplier became P. Thominet Cousin Freres, shown here on a late 19th - early 20th century painting by Paul Kron:

These appear to be pre-primed and stretched canvases, sold by the artists' supplier.

There does not appear to be any provision for expansion keys on Pottery's painting, which might indicate a less expensive support/strainer.

I haven't yet looked under the frame. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of 'room' between the visible part and the edge of the canvas, so I'd be surprised if there was anything there, but we'll see!

I'd bet on it being a "souvenir" of the Swiss or French Alps. If so it was a good souvenir.

It definitely elicits a feeling of the high alps. It captured something.

I think it needs to be cleaned, which I may pay to have done. This one is a keeper.
