The band is very well made, real quality work, with a hint of 18th century style, with those slightly protruding prongs. A goldsmith who does such excellent work is able to remove every trace of a former purpose.

That would be a very interesting coincidence:smuggrin: and what a journey it would be for this piece:jawdrop:
Yeah, because of my origins, I'm lucky to speak two very different languages - Romanian and Russian

As an aside, do you identify as Moldovan or as Romanian, or both?

Well Republic of Moldova has become an independent country after breakdown of USSR, so my citizenship is Moldovan and I identify myself as Moldovan, cause major part of my life I spent there, however I can also claim Romanian citizenship, because my grandfather was born on the former Romanian territories.
You know, to be a small state between two big empires (I mean Russian and Austro-Hungarian) it was like always to be in the centre of storm, as a result we got a mix of languages and roots:joyful:

Yes, not the best position to be in, but at least it gave you a multi-cultural background, which also helps to have a broader perspective on things.:)

Thanks, AJ, I thought they are garnets too. Didn't know the variety, beautifully dark. Do Almadine garnets look a lot like Madagascar garnets - deeply dark RED without any trace whatsoever of orangy or brownish when held to the sun? :)

Yes, they can look like that, and they can also have a more violet-purple tinge to them.
Africa has some beautiful garnets in that colour range. All found fairly recently.

Old amethysts could be found in that color too, hence the confusion. If this is Romanian, the odds go up for garnets.

A friend of mine lives in Moldova part time; he's an American who used to work in southern Russia so his Romanian is...iffy. :D The people he knows are mostly poor; my guess is when the Russians and Austrians left they took any money with them.

There were almost 80 years of USSR, after downfall of which, Moldova became an independent country without any economy, low resources and deficit budget (more or less all former Soviet republics were in the same position), so yes, there are many poor people. The country still coming around after that crises, but that’s a different story.

Not to mention the "you're next" feeling if the Russians had knocked over Ukraine like they thought they would. The population isn't large either. I live in the USA state of Connecticut and our population is higher. It also tends to be much wealthier, although many who live in the cities are very poor.

Hang on in there. You have friends, Moldova already has candidate status for the EU. Just a few more years and Moldova will be in 'our club'.:)
