I have never seen anything like this before. I think it may be used as some type of portable smoking stand. Maybe cigarettes on the right and short cigars in the center. I think an ash tray on the left? It looks like the ashtray area had a piece of wood in front of it at some point. Also, I can see a stain inside that area that appears to have been from some type of tray? This is about 13 1/2 inches long, the metal is something nonmagnetic. Anyone have a clue on this?? 1.jpg 1a.jpg 1b.jpg 1c.jpg

Rather than being an ashtray, could the one compartment be for matches? Can't think what would need that little vent.

the vent.....is a grill to butt out a smoke....& there would have been a metal tray under it..

Well, now it’s turning into an arts and crafts project. I dug into my old screw assortment and replaced the shiny brass Philips screws with more politicly correct ones. Well, then I just can’t stand it with the wood piece missing in front of the ash tray. Found a 100 year old piece of oak from an Edison cylinder player. Crafted a new but old replacement for the missing piece. It’s not glued in yet, just doing the final fitting. It looks like this has lots of other old repairs!

T'would be of no consequence if not, bosco! I would sacrifice an Edison for that cause, inna heartbeat!
Some of the later ones were veneer, anyway...they're fairly common hereabouts, 'tho admittedly, most are in sorry condition, having been long since consigned to th' drafty, moldy barn or chicken house, if not just left inna weather.

Another ex-smoker here. My last cigarette was in October of 1997. I rarely get the urge anymore but it does occasionally cross my mind.

    Cool item!
