Earlier today, I found this pyrographic portrait of a native American in a local thrift shop. It “feels” quite old, with the unvarnished wood on the back having a fair amount of oxidation. Any ideas on when it might date to?

Pyrographed art like this was a hot hobby in the 1890s up until about WWI. Guys got to play with fire and it didn't require electricity, which most people didn't have on the earlier end.

Thanks! In the course of researching this piece, I found another very similar example. This makes me wonder if they are commercially-produced. Flemish Art Company of New York, perhaps?

Certainly could be, although Flemish Art usually marked their pieces as far as I know. There were others. Somebody probably went to the local five and dime and bought the Indian to play with.
