They cleaned it, removed the old varnish, and retouched some parts.

I'm with you on this one. My dad had a tool that was a basket on a pole with hooked parts, used for getting fruit high up on the tree. The only other tool I could find 17th, on a pole, with a scoop (ladle) had something to do with loading a cannon.

What do you mean red flag. I don't have the painting in hand yet.

So it is part of a religious painting, depicting a person engaged in something horticultural.
Could be part of a harvest thanksgiving painting, thanking God and saints for a rich harvest, or asking it of them.

But... but... Hate to disagree but... He's holding a weapon of war. And the fruit are likely symbolic. (Look like pre-commercially farmed pears or perhaps apples to my eye.)

I think that I agree with you. It doesn't seem to be any kind of tool. Also think that there is some type of symbolism. And also if it was to be a farmer he should be wearing appropriate clothes. The image seems more classical and has some type of symbolism in my eyes.

No one said he was a farmer, at least not in the posts I read.
I thought it was established that it was a religious figure. It could even have been an allegorical painting.

I thought that if someone has a harvesting tool and holds fruit for the god to bless should be farmer. :) But I think that it should be more of a weapon than a tool, so the symbolic meaning must be more accurate.

Symbolic can apply to any part of life, and it can be religious, mythological, legendary or allegorical. I'm sure I missed some categories.;)

I still haven't found a concave or convex spear or similar weapon though.

Now I see what you mean about concave shape. It looks like it is some kind of a "shovel", right. It indeed now looks weird to be a weapon.

That's a long handled planter. I own short handled ones. Takes out a neat nice core of earth without having to shift loads of it.

I see no evidence that this is a Glaive or Bill or pole weapon of any kind.....
& the guy is hardly military in dress !

I see. That makes sense. So do you think this is a boy or a girl? Also with all this info what could the allegory be?
