Need help identifying hardware on Derby desk

There are two mysterious buttons on the drawer support (towards the ends) below the middle drawer, between the two side cabinets. It seems to have been an electric switch of some kind at one point, with screws to hold wires on the back side. It is the only hardware that isn't the same kind of brass used on the rest of the desk.

Identifying what those mysterious buttons are for is at the top of the list - the desk itself is in reasonably good shape for its age, and I don't see restoring it to be too difficult a job.

I'm also looking for help/advice on what type of finishes to use when restoring (I was planning on using Danish oil). Any help would be appreciated. It was purchased off of Craigslist from a family in Redding, California, USA. I've enclosed a link to the photos here.
