At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to the painter Pieter Frederik van Os in Haarlem and then to the horse painter Wouter Verschuur.</p><p><br /></p><p>Together with fellow artist and fellow townsman Paul Gabriël, Mauve often went out into nature to paint. From the age of 20 he worked in Oosterbeek, where he met other artists such as Willem Maris, with whom he became good friends. Maris introduced Mauve to fellow artists in The Hague, which introduced Mauve to the Hague School.</p><p>His work received the famous silver tone. The location of The Hague by the sea will undoubtedly have played a role in this. Mauve preferred to capture the gray Dutch skies instead of blue with sunshine.</p><p>In 1871 Mauve moved into a studio in The Hague. There he briefly gave Vincent van Gogh, who was a cousin of Mauve's wife, painting lessons. Mauve's influence on Vincent was greater than is generally assumed. He took over themes such as spitters, potato eaters and timber sellers from Mauve.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>From 1882, Mauve often worked in Laren in the summer. It was Jozef Israëls and Albert Neuhuys who drew Mauve's attention to the picturesque village. Together they went into nature and painted ydillic and moody landscapes. On the enthusiasm for Laren, Anton Mauve wrote to his wife Ariette on 3 June 1882: and the people are the sweetest kind that can be imagined. ... "</p><p>In 1885 Mauve bought the villa Ariette, named after his 18-year-old wife, in Laren and settled there permanently. That would only be for a short time because in 1888 he died during a family visit to an aneurysm.</p><p>Mauve spent his most productive years in Laren and together with Jozef Israëls, and Albert Neuhuys he was the founder of the Laren School.</p><p>The heathland with sheep herds that he painted in Laren were particularly popular.
