How big is it, and what is it painted on?

It looks confidently painted. Someone influenced by the Nabis.

Yes, it could have been done by a les fauves era artist, but it would be most helpful to see a photo of the back. I cannot tell if this is painted on canvas or board?

There is a resemblance to the style of Andre Derain but not enough for an attribution. The fact that the signature does not show that name seems unlikely he did this. Where in France did you purchase this? How was it sold to you as?

Perhaps this is not a sign of artist but a place where it is been written or a name of a picture? Can it be Thames? It is thick cardboard.

Please show us closeups of the edges, the back, and details of the paint.
Yes, it could be the name of the landscape setting and not a signature.
Have you found any examples of Derain's signature on paintings?
Or any examples of his work?

I'd stick to Nabis. Fauvism is a bit later and a bit farther along the road to abstraction. Heavy cardboard is millboard and a common enough painting surface from the 19th and early 20th C. The use of it supports the idea that the painting has some age to it. To my eye, the weakest part of the painting is the upper right where it looks like the painter didn't have as much control as he might have wanted. He really had to work the paint there, much more so than elsewhere in the picture, and it looks like he lost it a bit. It's extremely unlikely that this is by a major artist, but it could very well be an adequate example of post impressionism from the period.

This is one of those instances where you might want a hands-on appraisal by someone with hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge.

You could try to run it by one of the big auction houses. They are not likely to provide you with a lot of info, but it will be a telling point whether or not they express an interest.

Agree re upper right corner. Artist seems to be unsure of what he wanted to accomplish there. In fact, right edge seems somewhat tentative when compared to left. Perhaps artist was left-handed.

Thanks, it's unlikely to be a famous painter.

Without the back, it's difficult to see how old the pressboard may be.

THIS is such excellent advice, I really cannot add to it.

IMO it’s not Fauvist. The palette is reality based. Love this picture. I think it’s special.

So this looks like a painting on Masonite to me. Picture of the back may prove otherwise. But if it is Masonite, that wasn't invented until 1924 and widely used until the 1930's in the US. I've looked at this because of its use in furniture. I don't know whether it was exported from the US or what was used in UK, Europe, maybe there was something similar in those countries with different dates?

Also, the masonite shows through on the painting, it was not prepped with undercoating. Which usually indicates to me that it was not done by a professional artist, though I sure there are exceptions. Signed in pencil also suggests that to me? Maybe those with more experience will say I am full of it?

So my feeling, pending pics of the back, is that this could be a 20th century student work in the style of Nabis? Am I off base?

Appears to be masonite to me too.
I don't really think it matters what we call the style.
I have no idea how big this is either ??

As for prepped with undercoating, Jeff means it's not gessoed. I doubt that to be an identifying factor, but it could be. I have no idea if that's pencil, we need a better picture of it. How large is your painting, please, @Hermes1234 ?
