That's a very sensible way to approach it and probably what I would do. But I don't think it's ugly, unique yes, but not ugly.

 

The ones on Ebay that sell for the most money are in great condition and may be a unique color. The ones in good used condition go off at auction in the mid $100s which isn't bad for a $3 investment. There are a lot more of the less expensive ones selling than the big money versions. I checked completed listings and there were several shown.

 

If the box is nice enough for you to use for a gift, quite probably it is. Amazing the amount some boxes fetch when sold alone.

 

I went into a charity store once, and found a nice molded glass necklace sitting in a pre-WWII Tiffany box. It may have been WWI-era - green with a silk lining. The box sold for less than it should have; the right people weren't looking that week.

 

My wife put it away. But, one of these days I'll take a photo. It's pretty incredible.

I'm going to hopefully have it listed soon. Because Christmas is just around the corner. I've seen the sold and listed ones. I think ours is in excellent condition.

I was looking for a box to hold the Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs cameo necklace, and couldn't believe the prices on older ones. This looks like it should be for a ring. But, it's for a pendent or pin. It's not fancy, it's much nicer than new ones.

When you have something that should sell for $100. Put it at Buy It Now for $110. Someone will offer you a fair price. It might take a little longer. But, you'll get close to your asking price. What many do, and it doesn't work out well is, not consider time zones. I've won auctions I shouldn't have because they'd end at like 2am EST. Few will stay up to bid. I have. Most everything I sell now is Buy It Now or Best Offer. I won't accept a Best Offer till the item has been up a few weeks. My prices are already pretty fair.

 

I don't even sell on eBay any more, and this was in the days before BIN was a thing. There were no fixed price listings yet.
