Usually on the backside of the piece. They may be very small.Full size photos would help also, click the full size option before posting.

It is a pin with someone's monogram, as Holly said. Looks like EM or ME.
The marks can be on the back, on the pin, or around the rim, depending on the country it was made and marked in.
Right side up, still slightly tilted:

When I had a similar pin several years back, I was told it was an AEI Mourning pin - AEI standing for Amity, Eternity, Infinity pin.

Here's my pin from Worthpoint as I no longer have it on my computer:

    antique-victorian-sterling-silver-aei_1_b7706106bf0382e8e7f4ab5c3cc12890.jpg

    Here's the description:

Antique Victorian Sterling Silver AEI Stick Pin
The initials AEI, originally from the Greek, translate to “for now and forever”, (aei, aiei or aion). The Victorians re-interpreted this to represent “Amity, Eternity, Infinity”.

Input from others suggests that much more can be seen the more you look at this pin - note the cross, the crown, and a left facing Ichthys , also known as the Jesus fish.

    Coincidence or incorporated on purpose?
