Newbie here, looking to learn what I can. Some of my interests are; Art Deco furniture, vaccum tube electronics, old West firearms, vintage sewing machines, streamlined appliances, Vietnam militaria ( especially night vision ) and 1980s Japanese vehicles.

I do house remodeling work and that's why I made an account here.

Welcome! That's a wide swath of interests. I'm primarily a joolie, but also get into textiles, transportation stuff, and ... I'm a magpie with a hard core information addiction so I'm interested in darned near anything and everything. I'm more into using vintage sewing machines than collecting them.

Some other addicts will be along later.

    Thanks everyone.

#evelby30 I haven't learned to sew yet, but I intend to and on a vintage machine. Do you use a treadle or electric? If electric, straight or zigzag stitch?

    # johnnycb09 what part of Florida? I'm on the Gulf close to Venice.

    Hi SWFL!

Welcome to Antiquers, and to New England. I live 10 miles N of Boston, Ma.

In case evelyb doesn't see your question, a zigzag stitch is for stretch materials, or to keep fraying edges from fraying more. It is also used in many ways for decorative stitching.

Straight stitching is used mostly for seaming....but evelyb might have different uses and opinions.

I use an electric, a 60s Singer a few years older than I am. Straight stitch is for regular sewing. Zigzag is for knits or fray-happy fabrics. You can use it as a top stitch too. Some older machines have disks to tell it to do different fancier stitches too. Most of what I've been doing these days are masks and baby quilts, but I know enough about clothing construction to be trouble. Old textiles too.
