This was in a box lot of stuff along with some old Penn, Mitchell, and South Bend manuals. There are no markings and looks like it is the innards of a fishing reel. I have looked at those manufactures and have found similar, but not it. Any ideas/info?

    Hi,
When I was a kid my gramps made a reel to keep my kite string on. It looked very similar to this one. I wonder if he used and old fishing reel to make my stringer?

I would say early 20th century, 1930 to 40. Maybe a little later. Looks kind of rough though. Does it still turn? If it does, a little oiling and cleaning and it would probably sell well. There are a lot of collectors of vintage fishing items.

    Hi,
After years of looking at wooden handles on objects I find 20s,30s and 40s usually green paint. 50s usually had red painted handles. JMHO

I have to agree. Though I would not use it to conclusively date an object, I certainly use it as a starting point if I have no other.

And I have to admit that I never realized that I thought this way until Greg put it into a cohesive thought! Thanks Greg!!!

Funny thing. I had just been there a few minutes before so I knew exactly what you were talking about. I thought, "huh, I bet that was supposed to go on that other thread." :hilarious::hilarious:
