    I agree with more, the handle is celluloid which I think takes it out of the kitchen and into the bedroom/vanity area.

    Celluloid stains so you wouldn't want to be using it with food.

    So both those things sold, and for pretty impressive prices.

    Maybe the handle on yours is real ivory? No sterling marks on the metal portion?

    This one is strictly utilitarian, no fancy materials. I do not have any oranges in the house at the moment, but as soon as I get some some I will try it.

    That said, I still have the problem of finding out how to switch it on.

    I think you should look for "the switch" in the "handler." Get him/her "switched on" with an orange and . . . but you know the rest, I'm sure. ;)

    The "how" - first use the upper point on the concave end to pierce the rind starting at the end where the stem was. Make a second slice. Second, use the convex end to slip under the rind and lever with the handle to release the rind from the pith, working your way from one end to other. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all the rind.

    Voila!
