Odd sterling iron layered cross pin

    This is about 1.25 inches square, made from a layer of what I think is iron between two layers of sterling, held together with four brass rivets at the corners. There is a strong attraction to a magnet which is why I think the center layer is iron. The iron surface is textured, as is the revealed cut out cross.
    Any thoughts as to place of origin, time period? Thanks!
