I would guess that is a cast iron skillet used to heat up fajitas or some such. It hangs in the oven to heat up first....

But why would they be on the floor? And have those little white blobs on them?

I'm not a fan of the rat trap suggestion either, but at least that's something ordinarily found on the floor.

I do agree but look at it closely with the feet it has, it's 'heavy' and the floor is tile...as is above the oven so it is a conundrum indeed.
Maybe this is something normal to the artist or.....what in the Helsinki do I put in this 'blank' area for some balance...
Maybe those are tortillas partially rolled up or some kind of dumpling?

A metate? The thing used to grind down corn into meal for tortillas and such? One could push down with greater force if it was placed on a floor, I would think.

Are the edges high enough for that?

Some don't have any sides at all ... for those who believe in the '5 second rule' ;)

I also think it is a metate. I does look really small for floor use but larger ones are used on the floor. Here is an illustration of one being used.

Thanks, Brad and Quirkygirl, for that identification. When I looked back at the detail pictures it was easier to "see."
