Remember that pilgrim table i stole in Jan at the Vogel sale at Sotheby's? well, they had a pilgrim turned chair as well, it sold for a cool $125,000.

It was traditional for these chairs to have a cushion, guesses peeps even back then realized these chairs were hideously uncomfortable.
Naturally, the Vogel's had a cushion for their chair as well, it was the next lot after the chair and sold for $1625.

Even the staircase looks right. I'm struck with admiration and envy!

Ah James sorry you didn't get it as you could have appreciated it. Hopefully it's new owner will too as they must have an idea of what it is. It will be even better if it turns out to be a museum.

As I said it has been very enjoyable musing and learning with you on this chair. Which brings me to mention about sharing your research as freely as you have. I think you're awesome to explore and share with us! But as a more practical matter, it may not be in your interest to share quite so freely with the entire internet if you're interested in purchasing something. Unless something has changed I believe if you discuss in the "general discussion" section it is only viewable by board members.

I love the sharing of knowledge but I'd hate to think you'd miss out on something because you called attention to it:).

Thanks SIS! Yeah, I don't really care about it if people use my research, I have more than my share of early stuff as it is. And although not a dealer if i acquire anything new now, i have to sell something already here before i can place the new piece!
Plus, sharing research helps me in other ways, I would NEVER have acquired the Bird chest (an important piece of americana) if not for sharing research with a particular dealer on several other pieces. So it works both ways, knowledge is only important and has value if it's shared.

I found your auction, and agree that sharing is important, and given the spirited bidding this item received I doubt your discussion here made any difference in the price this went for. All items went high, so there must have been a lot of interest in the Gore estate and the fact that these were coming from Colonial Williamsburg deascension. https://brunkauctions.com/auction/premier-and-emporium-auction-march-21-23-2019-12245/159 But I also think SIS is right that keeping mum until after the fact might help you get a bargain someday!!

Possible, but I'd say it's much more likely to get a bargain at say the Vogel sale where the primary focus is on what you are collecting, in that case early american furniture and the collection value in the millions. The Vogel furniture collection value sold was over 4 million with over a dozen pieces in the 100k + range. Many lesser pieces fall thru the cracks at that type of sale.
By contrast at Brunk the other day, most of the stuff was oriental/asian pieces, primarily pottery and very little early american furniture. Not a lot is going to fall thru the cracks at that type of sale because there isn't much EA furniture to begin with.
