My wife bought this mirror for a few hundred euros in a shop in Lyon.
The seller, between the reservation and the delivery, received several rather high offers, but he kept his word and kept his initial promise to give the object to the first buyer (my darling, therefore).
I remain dubious.... In the meantime, the mirror has suffered a fall and one of the candlestick supports is a bit twisted

Could someone please tell me the nature of this object? Thank you very much!

Pics of the back would help . It looks like a dressing table mirror, possibly victorian,1870s-80s.

It has candle holders and appears to be bronze. I guess they were still using candles in the 1870s but it might be even older. Could this have had fire gilding on it at some point? (she asks like she knows what she's talking about)

They are often called girandole mirrors because of the attached candlesticks.

I'd be on board with an 1870 date. Shame about the bend to the candlestick arm. Be very careful in trying to bend it back. For some reason, cast items seem to bend once without breaking but often break when bending back.

Cast iron can be very brittle. So no surprises there.

I imagine that a restoration specialist will be able to repair it (perhaps by heating the candlestick arm ?)

what can you tell me about its origin? English, French, Italian... the octagonal shape of the mirror also surprised me ?

below, an opinion found on this mirror :

It's a bronze table or toilet mirror in neo-Renaissance style dating from the end of the 19th century.
Before the advent of electric lighting, the brilliance of the mirror was enhanced by candles fixed on two bobeche-light arms.

This table mirror, with bevelled glass, has a richly carved bronze frame with a copper plate on the back and a removable cut-out support.
The brown patina is very nice.

We find the decoration of the ornamental repertoire of the Renaissance, 16th and 17th century, with the cut leather, the cabochon medallion escutcheon (or mirror), the fleurons, cul-de-lampe, symmetrical arabesques, masks, putti and bestiary of ram's head and equine feet.

The chasing is of good quality (difficult to really tell from the pictures).
If there is no space between your finger placed on the mirror and its reflection then the mirror is not older than the middle of the 19th century.
I can't really see how the feet are fixed.

Finally, "B.D." surely corresponds to the brand of the 19th century foundryman (La Société des Bronzes de Paris? Barbedienne ?).
