Thought this looked different. Anyone know what kind of wood this or and maybe age?

Mine is a lump of maple. That one is not maple, is all I'm sure of.

It appears like it was varnished, which seems unusual for a “working” rolling pin. It certainly not like the ones my wife chases me around with …. ;-)

It looks great, but I don't think it is very old. The 'roll' also looks fixed to the handles, does it roll at all?

Never saw a varnished one before and I agree about the handles not being able to roll. Maybe a modern decor item?

The really old ones do not roll on bearings. This one is obviously machine turned based on the end indent. The more I look at it, the more I think this might be a tropical hardwood of some kind.

I know nothing about how to recognize wood types but the most popular woods used for rolling pins were maple and lignum vitae.

My sweet Lady has 2 that are similar in their one-piece construction. Both are used almost daily, an' she rejected one I offered early in our days together that had 'roller' grips...said she wouldn't use it because of that feature. She's young yet...only 78...so there's time yet for her to learn about these new-fangled conveniences! If I recall correctly, my mother had one, too...brother got it when she died. Wish I knew whatever became of it.

I have 2 that have the ball bearing handles, I bypass them and just roll as if there are no handles. Gives me better control :D

I didn't know olive wood was used for the vintage/antique ones.

THe one I use, when I use one, is a rolling PIN - one piece. My mom's has metal bearings. Never saw a lignum vitae one, but have seen both stone and glass.

Not that new-fangled, my mother (born in 1923) had one all of her adult life.;)

Do you mean one with (ball) bearings...or a rolling 'pin' plain an' simple?

Hm. None of my rolling pins have ever had ball bearing rolling handles.

A plain rolling pin with a rolling roller.;)
Ditto. Just a separately made rolling part.
