Maybe Grandpa had it on a shelf, and somebody figured there might be other collectors out there?

It must've been instinct Evely, they figured it was a fun curiosity yet perhaps not enough to have any cash value ?

I've worked in the thrift store business for over 25 years - If i had a nickel for every old mayonnaise jar, pickle jar, ancient washed plastic cutlery etc, I would be a very wealthy man indeed! People just toss what ever in a box and call it a donation.

When it should have gone into the recycling? Been there, seen that. I think the Ill Will tosses them into the landfill instead of recycling.
