I don’t really know much about opals, but I bought this pendant this morning. Does it look like a real opal to y’all? Anyone recognize the signature? As always thanks a bunch!!! IMG_9119-compressed.jpeg IMG_9119-compressed.jpeg IMG_9121-compressed.jpeg IMG_9120-compressed.jpeg

I'm not sure what that is, besides artisan-made.

cool......thats definitely a good thing. Looking at the surface of it..it does look promising.

but HOW opal it is will depend if theres anything else attached to the opal.....as it could be just a slice ;)

I just did an acid test in it, and it is sterling.

Looks like a triplet, appears to have air bubbles between 11 and 12 o'clock.

I was reading about triplets but could not figure out how to tell. But I think you are right. Are triplets a bit warmer to the touch as well?

If the cap is plastic it will feel warm,if it is glass/quartz it will feel colder.

I've never seen opal that looked like that, but if it's boulder opal who knows.

boulder opal would have mostly large brown patches in it (surrounding rock/etc............so definitely not that (roll eyes) (emojis not loading.....tooooo much bandwidth needed? playful )

does look a little unusual though granted.....but agree with triplet or such

you don't mention size or show thickness, but a pic of the side showing thickness and side of opal might show us whats going on better ;)

With opals a convex front and closed setting means triplet. If you look at the stone from the side, you don't see the opal but the transparent material of the top layer of the triplet.
The colours move, so it is a genuine opal triplet with gorgeous colours. My mother used to say this type looks like French cathedral windows. That said, it could have a dark backing to enhance the intensity of the blue.
There seems to be a scratch through the top layer.

If an opal is solid, the back is open to show the stone. The front is often convex but not always. If you look at it from the side it is all opal.
A doublet is a slice of opal on a backing. It usually has a closed back as well.

I think the cap is plastic. It feels too warm for glass or quartz.

At first I thought it was dichroic glass. Possibly from Mexico. I see a lot of that here. But the colors and shapes moved and shifted too much.

Definitely a triplet! When I look at it from the side i can see a line where the clear layer meets the stone. Thanks!
