    I have three of these whats-its.
    Atkey's Chandlery in Cowes IoW was founded in 1799 and is still in business. I sent them photos but they have no idea about the purpose or age of these, though they did suggest some sort of decorative purpose. Atkey's changed hands away from its original owners in the 1960s so it seems likely that these things (frames?) are from before the transfer of ownership since the original Atkey people would likely have known what these are.
    So... they are painted dark blue and gold, are iron and quite heavy. Each measures approximately 16.5cm wide and 16.0cm high. Any ideas on purpose or age?
    At this point, I'm thinking maybe they were hung on doors to frame the word indicating what type of room it was.

    Did you buy them on Etsy?
    I think I just found the original ad.

    Just wondering it you really mean CM? Converting to feet (USA) would be approximately 5.5 feet - that would be HUGE to hang on a normal door.

    Yep. I live in a boating community and I think these may be desirable here. If not, I like them and may hang them in my own living room. :smug:

    Sorry, I mean centimeters. :)

    cm = centimeters or mm = millimeter?

    :facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

    16.5cm wide and 16.0cm high
    (So yes, 165mm x 160mm!)

    Thanks! I'll go back and edit my original post in order to cut down on confusion.

    16.5cm = 6.4 inches

    @davedempsey

    The OP originally left out the decimal points. . .

    Maybe framed a card with the name of the occupant of the cabin?
