I'd agree that manmade fibers and snaps make it later rather than earlier.

haven't been able to find a loose thread anywhere on it

but think it might be silk looking into it, fabric makes a trampled snow sound when scrunched, and changes colour in light

Looks more like rayon or some such to my eye but hard to tell from photographs. I wouldn't expect silk to hold all that decorative stitching well. Interested to know what others think.

Beautiful what ever it's made of.

What is a 38 size? 38 inch chest?

Two possibilities: 38 if made in HK is probably the UK sizing of a 38 inch bust. However, European size labels were also used. That's a 88 cm bust. So it needs measuring. HK clothing comes up small.

Yeah measures smaller than a 38 chest

    Pit to pit 17 inches

So more like a 34 chest

European size label then. It doesn't matter too much, it's the actual measurements that will count. The arms can be very narrow.

Exactly. Sizes change over time. Measurements don't.

    I suspect it's about a modern UK 8.

It might be a silk/rayon mix. I do have some older ones in very heavy silk though.

Not an expert but... Think the hand-embroidered ones are much more often silk than the brocade ones.

    Silk, rayon, doesn't matter now

My 8 year old niece found it, tried it on and said she never wanted to take it off !

Asked her how it felt on and she said "actually feels cool but like super comfy, have you got a stick to put in my ponytail ?"

A little bit big for her, but it was her 8th birthday today n all

That is a lovely gift. And she must be a special girl to appreciate.
