@daveydempsey . What do you reckon on this? It isn't soldered in the frame, but seems in amazing condition for the supposed age.

Maria Theresa trade thaler, half thaler, or something thaler coin used in exchanges with Turkey and other parts of western Asia. Used in parts of the Middle East right up until WWI and I think minted for almost that long. When you see coin belts made of fake coins, the real ones used to be made of these. Dowry money. I found one here once. They were used as jewelry too. Davey can probably fill in the details and correct me where I screwed it up.

Yes its an Austrian Maria Theresa trade Thaler

Thaler is where the word Dollar comes from.
Very common and they have been minted and restruck for decades and are still made to this day with the original dates on from 1780

They are worth silver melt value.

They are also copied and faked.

Buy a Rare Earth Magnet off eBay, they are cheap and last a lifetime.
Its the best and fastest method to test for silver.

Here's one of the five I have.

Thanks both - twenty quid, so I thought not bad, even if all I do is wear it! I'll buy said magnet.

The first one I ever saw was one a British gent dug up when working on his garden. Darned things went everywhere.

I just got another today.

Started on a house clearance and in the garage I found 3 buckets of coins dating from Roman times to present day.

105 pounds or 47.6 kilos of coins to sort through and some really good stuff.

Wheeeee! That'll keep you out of trouble for a while! Someone who lived there was a detectorist?

Apologies for hijacking the thread - what does it mean when a coin is 'restruck'?

An officially produced coin that's struck from an original die. Restrike gold and silver coins are issued with a retrospective date by the original mint or an officially authorised manufacturer.

So basically an authorised reproduction or replica? Or "fake".

No not a fake or replica, they are struck with the original dies that were used in 1780 by the minting authority.

Think of them as second state or third state, like a Rembrandt engraving.

Oh okay. That makes sense now.
