Picked these up today, $20 for the pair. Heavy for their size. Fairly new in my opinion, maybe late 20th at best, and while nice I have seen so much nicer out there. I can not figure out what they are made of. Any thoughts as I wish to put them up for sale and want to describe them properly. Is there a standard material/stone used for this style?

    Thank you.

I am no expert but when I saw the photo I thought maybe wood rubbed with something to achieve that colour or maybe resin? I googled a bit and some vintage Chinese figurines made of resin have that darkish coppery red colour. There will be people around here who know more than me though.

Thank you, it is a bit to heavy for resin. Rock, petrified rock or bone maybe. Of course I am just guessing.

I did run that through my head, but hoping they are not as I can not sell them legally, I believe. Also, when I do see the tusk carved I think they are most always more delicately done. But I can be way off..

I've found certain resins are quite heavy. I think I see bubbles in a few spots...can we see the bottom/bases?

I’m ok with that, if that is what it is. But does that indicate a mold or still a carving? It truely doesn’t look like a mold.

Molded. Could have added detail after casting.

Agree resin, from a mold, no carving.:(
You can also see bubbles on the front, like here on the sleeve(?):

You can also see that none of it is carved, the lines do not continue (to suggest rubbing), but the ends of the lines are too rounded.

Another telltale sign, there is no carving between the tassles of woman's hairpin and her hair, which is what you would see on a carving of similar detail:

That is something I always look for, is it carved round the back of a detail, can you see around corners, so to speak.:pompous:

I don't know what the usual price is for these resin statues, but I think you could still make a profit.
