Paper labels have been used since the 18th century in america, dunno about europe. The Goddard/ Townsend shop in Newport RI sometimes used paper labels or signed the piece in ink to cite a famous maker, some makers "branded" their work with steel punches but, most early american furniture has no makers mark at all.
