Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I didn't understand the question! :vulcan: But did know about that connection, from classes taken long ago.

lol, me too! I kept reading the posts wondering what question had been asked and not having clue what kind of URL ("link") to computing that OBB needed. :bucktooth::bucktooth::bucktooth::hilarious:

You mean about the origin of the shawl?
If that is what you meant, I have several Kashmir shawls, passed down through the family. There is a portrait of my g-g-g-grandmother wearing one of them. (No, I wasn't stuttering :hilarious:)
I read books on the Indo-Persian pine motif and on historic textiles, for my costume collection etc. And I have been to several European shawl weaving centres, including Norwich and Paisley.
So yes, I knew without any kind of searching on t'Interweb.:joyful:

Nah, I meant the link between the weaving of the shawls and modern computing. ;) But I phrased it rather badly.

Ah, that's why you mentioned jacqard weaving. Yes, that is the link.
And then there is Ada, countess of Lovelace of course, computing pioneer, who seems to be wearing a shawl thingie here. And holding a fan, of course:happy:

Nottingham lace always reminds me of D.H. Lawrence, whose mother (a teacher) had to work in a lace factory. He also writes about a Nottingham lace factory in one of his books, don't remember which one, could be Sons and Lovers.

Thanks, I didn't even remember that.:):banghead: There is another book which also has many elements of his early life, in which the protagonist is a lace designer in Nottingham. I will probably remember in the middle of the night...

I need to go visit the museum of computing at Bletchley. It has many devices I worked on. ;)

There was a programming language called Ada.

@Jivvy - at one time, I could read punched tape, but it's not a skill that's widely useful now.
