I agree... NOT Queen Victoria... though they do appear Victorian. I don't think Queen Victoria would have ever sat for a photographer in Boston. ;)

This is a picture of Queen Victoria, taken about 1870 by John Jabez Mayall, a famous British photographer. I don't see any resemblance to the features of the woman in the Boston photograph, except that they may have been about the same age. Actually, the woman in the Boston photo looks older to me. They are not the same person.

A carte de visite photo of an unknown sitter taken by the prolific A. Marshall of Boston could sell for about $5 to $15 in the U.S. If a buyer can be found, that is.

Just as a point of interest, she's wearing a high relief medallion that resembles Abraham Lincoln.

Matronly but not as old as one would think. Today she'd look like this.

That size of photo is called a carte de visite. In this case the phrase does not refer to an actual visiting card. These photographs were not usually used as actual visiting cards. Here is some information.

    I wonder whether it's a carved cameo?

You are right, it does look like a cameo. Good catch.

You could go to Rome on your Grand Tour, have your photo taken in a nearby studio, then bring it to the workshop of one of the many cameo engravers & have it reproduced in shell or hardstone (agate).

Portraits of women are much less common than ones of men.

If that is truly a cameo of Lincoln ,especially a mourning cameo in say jet or other black stone- a hand carved piece of Lincoln 'memento mori',I surely would like to have it !
