23484777_1036755793131452_855631769_o.jpg Hi. I've got this nice carving, showing an Olympic scene. It's got a signature only I cant make out those letters (maybe it's a greek alphabet?) Has anyone seen anything like this?

I think you'd probably call this a casting, not a carving. Maybe Orpheus(with the lyre)? And I suppose that is Olympus in the background perhaps.

That's why I wanted to see the back.
    That would be repousse' no?

These have been discussed someplace before, thin sheet metal usually back filled with pitch.Maybe here a couple years ago or ebay. Possibly die stamped and hand chased details.

I didn't know what it was called but yes it's a repousse. Thank you! I'm still trying to make out the letters of the signature.

In terms of the imagery, it is a bit of a mix of neoclassical elements: the poet figure with a kithara; the regally seated feminine audience trio; classical columns entwined in vine; mountains in the background.

At the risk of ending up again with how small the Little Mermaid really is, I'm going to mention its resemblance in feeling to Thorvaldsen's relief of Apollo playing to the Graces & Muses on Mt. Parnassus.

I think it is an essentially modern composition, not depicting any particular figures or event.

While I cannot decipher the name at the bottom, I see no reason to think it is not written in the Roman alphabet.

I'd call it Olympus and not Olympic or people will think it's an athletic theme.

The needed adjective is 'Olympian'. :writer::turtle:
