Depends on the definition of musty I guess :) I know what clay smells like, and they smell like old clay... but not musty like my grandma's knickers.

I thought the same antidiem... I think the facial features were much more sensitive on mine. I really like their warm smiles.

Wait! Are we saying one of these figures is female? Good grief.

So, lets just assume these are not Ming... I mean what are the chances. lol What's my best- & worst-case scenario? Like I said at the start, I'd be really happy if these were Qing, even late Qing, but after that...meh, not so much. Altough for £5 I can't complain. haha

Having done more research, I think my two are the taoist HeHe Twins / Immortals, seen in the example below:

I'm also wondering if they might originate from the Shinwan kilns of the late Qing/early republic period? At least, that's what I'm hoping. I understand that the Sancai glaze was a Shiwan speciality as mentioned here.

Regardless, since researching the pair, they have really grown on me. I bought these initially to sell on, but don't think I could part with them now - giving me good vibes, so they are :)

Sounds like you've learnt a good deal along the way as well

    Enjoy them, whatever they are:)

    Yours are much nicer.
Coloured wares with these specific colours are usually made in Shiwan. Not just figurines. They also made beautiful ship's storage vessels with coloured dragons.

I like the faces of these 2 (the new figure you found) and think they more closely align with the presence and feeling of the couple you have.

I cannot go so far as to say "same artist" but very similar indeed. :cat:

Very true... I'm new to this so it's all about learning! My issue is retaining the info, although I've put together a word document for this one.

Thanks maan, I take that personally. ;)

How nice it would be if they came from the same kiln around the same time, because the pair I posted above are part of the Hong Kong Museum of Art's (shown below) permanent collection!

They were in one of the two donations in 1986, shown below (not sure which of the two).
