One of my recent estate sale Finds was this cute "pitcher" (or jug?) There was nothing on the tag beyond the price ($8, as I recall) and I'm curious to get your thoughts on when and where this was likely to have been made.

The colored glazes (particularly the green) have a "majolica" look to me - and clearly pooled at the bottom of the outside and in the places where there were dips and dents. The inside is also glazed, but it looks like a clear glaze over a cream-colored clay. Maybe that was slip? There is one place just inside the rim where there was some kind of manufacturing flaw. The only "mark" is an impressed number 59 in the middle of the bottom. (I checked to see if it was something else from the opposite direction, but the 5 is definitely a 5.)

I took a lot of pictures from different angles because the lighting kept changing the colors. Let me know if you need to see something not shown.

I have seen these sold at auction as Made In Japan kitchen articles, this would date pre 1940, corn was another motif they liked to use for their exports to the good old USA. :woot:

I think it's Brush McCoy, that handle on yours is a match with the taller Brush McCoy pitcher.

I just searched google images for Brush McCoy corn creamer and a few popped up, same as yours.

Thanks, Anund. I was going to post a pic of just the handle. Let me see what I can find.

I'd post some links but I'm no good at posting links when I'm on my phone.

I just looked up in Lehner's. With no mark at all, the first version of the company? Or the second?

:) I think so too. I have several other Brush McCoy pieces hanging around and they are all the second phase and not nearly as "artistic" as this one in both subject, glaze and finish.

It's on a Brush-McCoy catalog page from 1912 in the Huxford book as #59 Creamer.

OMG. Excellent info, Janet! Thank you, thank you!

I was worried that the 59 on the bottom would be useless!
