    I've seen restorers here use teeny tiny splints, but it's fiddly as heck.

    I doubt this will work for any length of use time, but glad you mentioned it. Perhaps taking the entire back apart and splicing it with a new piece that fits well is the answer? I think it would be worth doing that - you've already got the complete refinishing job planned, Rayo, right? ;)

    Yah! That actually is what it was called on the metal gallon containers! I looked for the brand and couldn't find it. I doubt it will work forever on a vertical surface of use wear though! It worked beautifully on antique flooring!

    They use wee splints of old wood with a smear of glue and then clamp. Seriously skilled.

    Good call - all the pieces were doweled on so a few taps of the mallet and it popped off. Then took everything apart and re-glued them, clamped overnight, and now nice and sturdy.

    It works especially well for refilling screw holes.
