    SO true.
Some of the best things I have came from that ignored box under a table! :)
I do look up especially in old garages and basements.

I missed a few words out of my post. I meant to say "rubbish expands to fill the space available"

In my experience in fixing all kinds of antiques, from fountain pens to sewing machines, cigarette lighters to binoculars, telescopes and bells -- items which are advertised as being 'broken' are rarely actually broken.

In many, MANY cases - 'broken' items are working items which simply weren't looked after properly - in the vast majority of cases - a thorough disassembly, careful and thorough cleaning, and reassembly - will restore an object to full functionality.

Whenever someone tells me that something they have is 'broken', my first response is invariably: "When's the last time you cleaned it?"

And almost invariably, the answer will be: "Years ago!"

If anyone tells you they want to go into the antiques business and how can they learn, always reply "you learn by losing money"

I will definitely remember this because someone is always asking me if it is easy to sell on ebay. I usually tell them that listing stuff is the easy part. Figuring out what sells & what doesn't then actually getting someone to buy the item is the really hard part. :p:p:p:p

I see this all the time. The most may be lawn mowers.
Some pimple have no clue that there is often a grounding tab to short circuit the spark. :p

Too true. OTOH I found a tag sale this morning with cameras, and the few I checked really were dead meat.

It's true. Some things really are trashed and worthless. But most things just need cleaning to get them working again.
