The lowest common denominator of 3 and 5 is 15. Then you do the division within the parentheses. Unfortunately, the result was a number of 15ths less than 1 and not equivalent to a number of 27ths that made any sense at all.

You don't need to find a common denominator for fraction division.
    2 1/3 becomes 7/3
    7 1/5 becomes 36/5
You don't divide. You multiply the reciprocal 5/36

    @Aquitaine
I have an answer, can I post it?

It has been an awful long time since I needed to use that. I had a feeling when I started that the process had something to do with multiplication, but that didn't seem logical. ;)

I've always had to do math my own idiosyncratic way. I remember that was the rule for dividing fractions, but I can't even begin to get my head around it all if I don't get all terms over the same denominator. Maybe test takers knew they were allowed to express the answer in decimal form, an assumption I did not make, given the set up of the question. Gets you a funky repeating decimal answer, but only way I can work out to do it.

I'm still up a river trying to get from St. Louis to Chicago.

I need to see "the work" for #12. Still makes no sense how you reconcile 108ths and 27ths.

But I got the right answer for the water trip!!

Hmm - not sure how I mixed my work up.
I have on another piece of paper this:

    7/3 x 5/36= 35/108

    6 4/27 - 35/108
    6 16/108 - 35/108

    I'm messing up here
    664/108 - 35/108 = 629/108

Duh! My brain must have been fried yesterday. I kept thinking that 27 did not divide into 108! Of course it does! :wacky:

Your decimal form answer is correct if it is 5.82407407 repeating, but can't figure out how you ended up working with 125ths?
