I came into a lot of old advertising that has that smell.
Its kind of like a mildew smell.

How do you get rid of it?

Some of the card board pieces (ie, National Geographic covers) have the orangey dots on them. Is there a way to clean that?
    It seems someone mentioned bread?

Yes you can roll a ball of slightly moist piece of white bread onto paper to remove dirt.
The best stuff for neutralizing smells is place the books in a box with a some bicarbonate of soda crystals (baking powder)

Ozone is the cure but foxing...... If that is what it is it is there to stay. :(

Hi I was just doing this yesterday! I read to crumple up newspaper into a container and put your books or papers in it and seal and leave for a couple of days. I did a book yesterday and it seems a little better this morning. I would change paper every couple of days.

I'm SO happy I have an ozone machine for this. :)

Yeah, would a ozone machine remove the odor from the book or just remove the odor from the room while the machine is running? I just looked up cost about 200-300.

Ozone kills all organic issues, including mold spores. It is why, when you put stuff outside, the smell disappears. It doesn't up and walk off. :) There's natural ozone in the air.
    It is DANGEROUS in quantity!!!
I had a separate building used for this marked dangerous with a skull and crossbones. I'd turn it on, close the door and run it 24 hours. Then open the door, flick the machine off and leave the door open for a few hours before I went in.
I watched for one for years... Got a brand new pro one at a G sale for.............$10!!!!
There may be much smaller ones out there you could just put into a box, OUTSIDE, with item in it.
I had mice get in my stored 1968 Nova SS. :( :p
My machine dealt with that. :)

If you don`t get the soda crystals which cost about $1
I`m told cat litter also works.

Probably takes the smell away but doesn't kill the issue. Then the spores migrate to other things....

Cat litter works brilliantly, but it needs to be the Fullers Earth kind.

Kitty litter for sure. Outdoor airing works great for some things, but might ruin paper more than it already is.

If it's touching the paper items, better to use newsprint paper with no printing on it than newspaper or the newspaper ink could transfer to the item.
