    Stencil should be horizontal and of a larger scale -- if a stencil is the way you decide to go. (You want to emphasize chair's width not height.) But don't go so bold that you eliminate all negative space. The stencil should have room to breathe. Avoid a cliche design like a fleur de lis which has nothing to do with its design. And a bold design will suit the chair's strong lines. Avoid the too fiddly. Just my opinion.
