I'm trying to figure out the text on the side of this antique Russian Salt Cellar. I wasn't sure where the beginning was(!), but have included 4 views below, plus the hallmarks (which are in 2 different places). The last pic didn't come out too sharp, but I think the date on it is 1883.

    Thank you! ... Dave

Beautiful, gimbler-dave. It has a Moscow mark, and I also read 1883.

Forgot the zolotnik mark, it is 84 which is .875 silver fineness.

No clue what it says, but somebody may have put the lettering on this with a chisel! Pretty sweet.

My Russian is sketchy but I'm sure I see, "without salt" and "without bread". There's a Russian saying,
"Bez soli i khleba khudaya beseda"
Talking is bad without bread and salt, or no agreement can be reached without the crucial ingredients.

Not something that I can read but I can see enough that I think @Caribou's House may have it. Great!

BTW @Any Jewelry I did not get any notification that you had tagged me.

Of course they used a hammer and chisel to do the engraving, many people still prefer the technique.

The picture angle was misleading on the date, so think it was actually 1889 (better picture below). Thank you all for the help with the translation. That lead to this item:
    https://www.hillwoodmuseum.org/collection/item/12.371.9-10
which has a similar inscription. I'm not seeing the picture of it, but it is of the same time period.

On a side note, I'm not always getting the email notifications of new postings, so sometimes don't notice new activity until I look (is that similar to what is happening to you Figree3?)

By the way, to follow up on the main thread for everyone - the salt was listed on eBay and received plenty of attention. Bidding for my customer ended just short of $200.00.

Pretty good for a salt! Is it headed back to Russia?

It has a slight indentation on the right, which makes me think it is a 3 which is punched with a blotchy stamp. A 9 would have a slight curve.

Dunno as it would matter one way or the other; it's Czarist silver either way.

It could help determine the maker or assayer. If the initials were punched properly.
