    I found this badge in a bunch of British & Canadain WWII military badges and patches in our recent house clearance,
    Crowned double headed eagle points to Russia however there is no sword held by the talons.
    Its as big as an Ike Dollar coin, it is very thin brass ,any ideas?

    As well as other countries, empires, etc... such as Austria-Hungary, anything connect to the Hapsburg Empire, Albania, Serbia, Ottoman Turks, England's Mercian Kings, Scotland's Perth, borough of Wimbledon in London, and the list goes on and on and on...

    Davey, this is a tough one. Like you I think probably an Imperial Russian military something or other. How dare the maker not give us a clue like something clutched in his talons or a shield with St. George doing his dragon thing or something on his chest! :( Many of the double-headed eagles of Imperial Russia had a crown over the heads as well as a crown on each individual head. This eagle badge just seems too plain for an office or rank of importance in the Russian military. So far the closest I have come up with for this plain eagle is a badge on an Imperial Russian 1910 cartridge pouch. It definitely is not the same in design or size:

    Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    I like it... maybe I'd wear it as a decorative pin. :)

    @Ladybranch
    This sold for just over £4 to a member of the von Habsburg family from Austria so I think it is safe to say it was Austrian or Austro-Hungarian :cool:

    It's a stereotype that if the two-headed eagle, it's necessarily from Russia. History says that the origins are in the state formations of Sumer and Babylonia. Byzantium, from which ancient Russia borrowed, brought fashion to Europe for the double-headed eagle. Yes, it was the Russian Empire that was more associated with this.
