Please help me to identify the artist of this scene. It shows the falls of the Lenny near Callander as is noted on the back and dates to 1903 I think...

W.M. Prendergast. I agree, 1903. It is very nice, Mat.

This does look more accomplished than your typical Sunday artist.

Thank you very much, Any Jewelry and Debora, that must be him! Just that there seems not much info about him...

It seems that this place was quite popular in Victorian times. I wonder why I find so few paintings of it...

If you use the correct spelling of "Leny," you should be able to find period paintings.

Oh, you are right! I searched with the name as I found it written on the back. Thank you again!

I found one auction lot listed as William Miles Pendergast; presumably the same person as the soldier of that name born in India in 1843, rose to the rank of major.

Nineteenth century army officers often received a fairly solid education in topographical drawing.

They're good enough to enlarge the signature. And they do appear to be the same. Now the question is... How did the auction house determine the watercolors were the work of William Miles?

Some information from the back of a watercolour in my collection titled ‘At Betws-y-Coed 1896’. Until I work out how to shrink images down to 1M on my phone I’m afraid I can’t show you the image.

    ‘WILLIAM MILES PRENDERGAST

    c1845-c1920

An artist who combined two careers, he learned to draw at the Royal Military College under the direction of top artists of the day as part of normal military training to record visually any intelligence information.

He joined the Worcestershire Regiment (29th of Foot) on 24th Nov 1863 and retired on 28th Apr 1885 with the rank of major.

Obviously a well-to-do gentleman he continued his artistic interests from his address at 15 Cheyne Court, Chelsea (still there) for many years.

He exhibited 1888-1902 at the Dudley Gallery.’
