The biggest accomplishment was meeting people with similar interests and getting their contact info. One was George, of Lebanese Catholic and Syrian Greek Orthodox parents. He’s pictured beneath a metal sculpture that’s not yet finished. He built the machine that crushes and bends 55 gal. Steel drums he used on one sculpture shown. I’ll just post a bunch of pictures for now, but this might be the most interesting weekend I’ve had in years. I did buy all the iron/steel gates shown in the pix, and a few more things.

Love the gates, and that rainbow chem lab model-looking multicolored thing.

Re the first pic with George under a sculpture. In answer to my question of how the precise repeated designs were cut in the hard stainless steel, the answer was computer-controlled high-pressure water jet. I think the edges of the cuts are more smooth and even than when a Computer-controlled plasma-torch is used. George made the steel armature that forces the stainless steel into the big curves or curls you see, apparently the armature is removed once the stainless steel is permanently bent to the desired shape. George will be on the National Mall on Earth Day with his massive crushed-and-bent drum sculpture.

In addition to designing the monster hydraulic press George designed two different “fixtures” for it. One forms squished drums into a 45-degree angle and another, 30 degrees, so the steel snake thing you see is made up of both 45 and 30-degree angles.

The mobile/sculpture thingie is great; you'd need some seriously high ceilings to hang it. It would be great in a big restaurant or a hotel lobby.

Correct. That is a commission piece as opposed to a speculative creation. The patron (customer) showed the artist where it was to go, he took measurements etc. before even making sketches.

I'm not surprised. A three foot high statue is one thing; a 16 foot sculpture needs a home to go to.
