Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

@Studio Antiques .....Hi....Today, Monday....just watching Antiques Roadshow!! Do some research and check into a Rev. Holyoke who was President of Harvard in/around 1740.....there was a decent sized painting of what I thought was YOUR image here (only what AR had was a painting!!), but done by an artist (too fast to catch the artist) but done in 1749!!!! Good Luck and I'll see if I can dig it up!!!!

EDIT: Here's the AR item on the show.....not POSITIVE it's your guy, but sure resembles him!!! John Greenwood was the artist in 1749... Good Luck!!

@Aquitaine I always LOVE AR! Even the pbs advert LOL

Don’t think it’s Holyoke, but clearly my guy is from the same period! Take a look:

Agreed, they do look "similar", but don't really think they are one and the same, when put side by side......ah well, there was always HOPE!!!!!:):):)

I don't think, despite a similarity in faces, that the Rev. Holyoke would ever have worn a military style coat (which is why you thought Washington to begin with.)

I haven't looked up Holyoke, but from the wigs I would guess he's at least a generation earlier.

It's not just the face, but the clothing. It looks French to me.

This is a real challenge. I've looked at 18th century portraits for a long time. It looks so familiar. I've tried musicians, writers, politicians. He looks so smug and self-satisfied.

The inscription looks to us like "Lieut General Malen," but a search for that turns up nothing, so we're probably not even close... pretty certain it's late 18th Century, though, as everyone here seems to pretty much agree...

The inscription is much newer than the image - 20th century at least.
