It could be dumortierite and the buckle made by a student/hobbyist.

X3ZZZZZZ BK OF BUCKLE-edit.jpg Hi again @Rosie Davis!! If you would check out the 3 areas I've circled, it looks like it does say something, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREA by the pin that hooks into the loop holes in the belt....where the two red circles are!!!!

I agree, it could be lapis lazuli, but you can also find dumortite that looks like that.
Like komo, I have seen Chilean lapis with the same 'snowflake' look.

Regarding the back: can someone tell me what those little marks are that kind of look like paw prints? Have often wondered how they are formed and what they might say about an item.

Is the buckle 2 layers soldered together, the piece may have been overheated when soldering.

Denim lapis is a "trade" name for lapis which has a majority of white calcite in it.Like old faded blue jeans with a lot of bleached white areas. What other specific questions do you have?

Denim lapis is a light bluish-white form of lapis lazuli. This stone comes close to the color of faded denim material, hence the name. I've seen different forms of it but it's almost always the lighter blue with white specks and spots. It's simply a name to differentiate the darker lapis from the lighter speckled. So it's been around since lapis has been around. :) Lapis is most commonly found in Afghanistan.
