    Hello All!

Long time Lurker, first time poster. Anyhoo, I inherited a very nice silver cruet set from my father's collection. From the marks, I've determined that it was made by Peter & William Bateman of England around 1805 - 1814. Looking it over some more I found a very nice Lion mark on it. I've looked around a bit (not much) and can't find that mark anywhere. Also has some very tiny hand scratched letters and numbers after one of the sets of marks. Looks like "DS4232" and a cross over the lion mark as well.

Interesting stuff. Thought I throw it out to y'all to ponder.

    Cheers!

The date letter Q is for the assay year 1811/12. You will not find the lion mark as it is the armorial of the owner. Many armorials are listed in the publication "Fairbairn's Crests" of which a few editions are available online. The scratched marks are probably inventory marks.

Hi and welcome! I do have a copy of Fairbairn's Crests mentioned above though I'm not very good at using it. It is easier if you have a name to start with I've found.

From browsing, this lion, chained, is the closest to yours that they show and I've included the list of names they have associated with it. It may or may not be accurate.
