This was at a garage sale ($5) and it was just so pretty I couldn't leave it. Seller said it was a "fish knife" from her grandmother's estate.

What can you tell me? Thinking Aesthetic period, maybe? Would the etching be an add-on or something that was original to the pattern?

There is some red material I haven't cleaned... I think they used this for cutting a red cake.

Thanks for taking a look. Just looking for general info to list.

It's made in the Laurel pattern, patentd in 1878 - so yes I would call it early aesthetic period.

Very helpful to have the pattern name, thanks Bakers!

Would the etching (if that is the correct term) on the blade have been on every larger knife made in this pattern? Or would that have been some kind of special order?

The design on the blade would not have been on the place knives for sure. But I really don't know about others (like the carving knife.) Since the blade sizes vary, I think each size (master butter, cheese, etc.) would have an appropriately different design on it.

And I really don't know how the designs were applied.

That's a match! Thanks! Actually a "cake saw" is probably more saleable. It would be cool for a wedding cake, etc.

I'm assuming mine is not sterling as it isn't marked.

1847 Rogers is almost 100% plated. I'm only not say 100% to allow for that rare possibility that they made 1 item in sterling.

Thanks. It feels like silverplate in the hand (weight, etc.) and since unmarked, fairly certain it's silverplate. Appreciate you taking a look and your expertise.

Saw is very appropriate! I’ve not seen one with teeth like that. Very pretty pattern and looks nicer quality than the average (but I know diddly-squat about cake knives)
