Featured Small silver/plate casket

I picked this up yesterday out of curiosity. The mark intrigued me mainly. I was almost sure it was silver plate. The yellow colour inside and the overall quality suggested such. Anyway I had a root through my bag of yesterdays finds this morning and have found the mark after a bit of searching. Google lens took me to a Facebook page which had a link to this page.

So it appears to be Austrian. Does this mean it is solid silver or could it still be silver plate?

It is an import mark, so not Austrian but imported. Not Bohemian either, it was marked in Prague, Bohemia (now Czechia). Bohemia was also part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, but it is still an import mark.
With the absence of other marks it is impossible to say where it was made, but Germany would be my guess.

So it is silver, marked with an Austro-Hungarian import mark, assayed in Prague between 1902-1918.

Maybe check for tiny marks anywhere on or in the piece. They could be anywhere.

 

Ooh wow. That's great news. Thanks for the info. Ill have a look. I shall have to give it a good clean and see if anything is hidden under the grime.

I certainly will. What do you think it is by the way? Google is telling me its a biscuit tin. Id be most upset if I went to someones house for a cuppa and they produced this. You would hardly fit a digestive in it. Its about 10cm tall maybe. Maybe its a sugar bowl or salt cellar?

Ah yes. Tea used to be quite expensive so it wouldnt be too big.

 

I've found this on the rim of the lid. Just looks like the same mark as on the main body though. I'll keep on searching.

And i have found a pin prick of a mark under the lid. It is tiny though and I cant get any detail from it. It has a corresponding nipple mark on the top side of the lid so it's definitley a percussion mark. Doesn't seem much use if it's so small you cant read it.

It is a mark, but it doesn't look distinct enough to be an intentional mark imo.

The only eagle's head mark I know is a French mark for gold, but this is silver.

 

then maybe a Falcon...or Condor , or hawk......... but not a Chicken !!!!!!

 

Oh well. I cant find anything else. Sorry.

 

I'd think that was a bit late for a tea canister. Tea was widely available (including in bags) and not expensive.
