Featured Small Spode handleless cups? 1495 vs. 1H95

These cups came in a box lot. They are 2 1/2" to the side edge & 2 1/2" across the top.

I could not find anything like it on Replacements. The handwritten number on the bottoms look like 1495 or possibly 1H95.

Does anybody recognize the pattern or what exactly they were used for?

Those are lovely. Picture them in Georgian candlelight, which is why all the gilding. Those handwritten Spode marks are seriously early.

Would you mind if I snag and post on another forum? There is a poster there who is very knowledgeable about Spode and I’d like to find out why there are no handles. I’ve seen handle-less tea bowls, but not cans.

They're coffee cans, not tea. Early ones were sans handle.

So they would be considered a type of demitasse cup?

I will post to the other group and get back if there’s anything to add. Tea bowls I have seen, but not the coffee cans, and yeah, they would be demitasse size these days, but in those days, I dunno what the usual size was

This is probably completely off-topic, but the size & shape of these Spode coffee cans reminded me of something I have had for many years.

The set I have is packed away in one of my many bins of silver stuff, so I can't put my hands on it right now, but I did locate some old photos in one of my files.

The silver is German 800; the "can" is about the same size as the Spode ones Peggy has:

The Spode "cans" are obviously more ornate & much nicer, but is there any chance they had holders of some sort?

Two thoughts on these having some type of holders. First the holder portion would hide the beautiful design, but two that might explain the damaged spot in the exact same spot on both pieces.

    Hi Mansons,
Be careful using the world civilized. On my first trip to Denmark I was sitting in a friends apartment and his sister, BIL and daughter were visiting, we were sitting around drinking wine. I said this is so civilized. The Danes all jumped up and looked shocked. It seems that the word civilized as I used it meant that it was not civilized but meant that I said that they were lower and animals. I quickly apologized and thinks quietly returned to normal.

    They definitely didn't have holders.

Demitasse: a much later term for coffee cups. When these Spode ones were made, coffee was expensive and wildly fashionable. So, the demi monde had delightful delicate little cans.

The info I got from the other forum is that the cans once had handles, but broke at some point, so the handles were ground off and the cans repainted in those areas. These would’ve been expensive items and deemed worthy of repair. It is such a pretty pattern.
