Who has seen one of these before ?

I purchased this from a scrap dealer in rusted condition and gave it a tidy up with intent to just use it for garden furniture.

Its only when i had a close look that i found a date stamp of 1867 which matches the company history i googled up here.

The gearbox itself is about 2 feet tall and weighs a few hundred kilos.

It might seem cruel to use it for a pot plant holder but it doesnt really have value for anything else does it ?

Who has an opinion on a better plant to use in it ? , not really happy with that choice .

    Miniature Yellow Roses perhaps?
If it was mine, I'd bring it in. Find an old leather type accordian file and stick in in the top for my papers.

Great idea! How about a ficus? ...... with something low and trailing planted beneath.

Chinese Jade Trees have one over a barrel. However much one grows to despise the thing, it keeps growing...and one cannot get rid of it because that's tantamount to murder... Mother-in-Law's Tongue is much the same way. Erk!

I'd recommend the plant I have growing all over the place here (can't kill it either, but at least it's pretty), but I don't know what it's called.

WOW!!!! You did a GREAT job on it!!!!! But if you keep it outside, it won't stay looking great!!! How about bringing inside with a glass top or free-form wood top as a coffee table!!!!! You'd want to show that off!!!!!:happy::):):)

Edit: Oooops!! And WELCOME, Mee, to the forum!!! Looking forward to what other things you've got up your sleeves!!!!!:smuggrin:

Immediately upon seeing your photo I thought that the company lettering reminded me of an arched bridge over a creek or stream.

I vote with others that the plant (or plants) should be of a weeping/trailing variety. ;)

Just in the last week or so I was telling someone about how my mother felt the same way, that when she received a little pot of mixed plants, one of them MILT, she groaned & said that one was sure to be the only one to survive but she could not bring herself to just throw it out. Her prediction was correct.

    @KingofThings someone's talking bad about you.:cyclops::oops::oops::p:p:p

I'd bring that gear box inside too, but then I was raised by a train spotting engineer (the other kind).

Thanks for the warm welcome people :)

I upgraded the plants a little bit , i think it would look great as a display in a cafe or restaurant but i have no idea what it could sell for.

I can see Mrs @springfld.arsenal letting that one into the house, but it might be a bit of a drive.

Do you have a photo of the " dont know what its called's " ?

Jade plant or succulents in general are so easy to grow , i had 100 plus varieties but my enthusiasm for collecting them waned when i discovered there are at least 6500 varieties out there. :arghh:
