Soapstone carving, odd

This has been advertised as an Inuit soapstone by a local auctioneer. Sure doesn’t resemble any I’ve see and it’s massive. Maybe an African crocodile of sorts? Pretty interesting carving. Thoughts?

 

I'd say that a lizard-ish, scaled animal is unlikely in the Arctic....

Surprises me that this happens at highly regarded places but it does. I very much assumed this was the case here but there’s always the odd chance one is looking at something wrong or one is just wrong so doesn’t hurt to verify, but yeh this one I felt pretty darn confident about. I think the problem is they probably don’t know exactly what it is but they know what the best thing to call it is to get bids from other people that aren’t sure it’s not what they’re calling it but want it to be that. I think this happens with things called NA a bit sometimes.

 

The voracious arctic alligator feeds exclusively on penguins.

 

Looks like a pangolin to me. The long-nosed pangolin feeds on arctic ants. Scientists are baffled at how this animal can survive arctic conditions.

Why that photo exists is a real strange thing to wonder about.
