If anyone read @Ownedbybear ‘s thread on eBay gambles, I posted a photo of a necklace that ‘could be’ a glower. It’s arrived- have a look at the pics!
Also two unusual necklaces that I suppose are meant to look like ivory. Both have been restrung so clasps may not be original.
The one with the gold filled spring ring is heavier, wonder if celluloid?. The one with clearer striations is very lightweight and possibly more modern?
    Thanks for looking :)

I've got the twin to that yellow one. I suspect your very stripy one is a plastic of some sort. The other may be ivory.

I remember reading here about Ivorine, but I couldn’t tell the difference.

    Same thing, basically.

If the second string is not ivory, it is doing an extremely good imitation. Would need to have them in hand to feel sure.

That was my thinking, too. They're certainly very Schraeger ish.

Do NOT do a hot pin test.

I agree. Many a fine piece as been ruined with a hot pin, and yet some still swear buy it. I even see a so-called "expert" on tv biting the rim of a porcelain vase by Belleek, to see if it had been repaired... It hadn't been, but he damaged the rim with his teeth!

French ivory is the celluloid that mimics ivory. I've always seen it with straight lines.

I hope this is not very disappointing but the string in question is not ivory.

Not disappointing at all. In my post I said they were meant to look like ivory.
Never!! I restrain myself from commenting every time I hear it being advised on Facebook. I’d go up in a puff of smoke if they are celluloid too!. I suspect the ones with the gold spring ring are celluloid and I’m sure the ones with the more defined stripes are plastic but I like them for being unusual.
I have an ivory bangle somewhere that I dig out if I want to compare something to ivory. It has amazing Schraeger lines in it!. I’ll post a picture if I can find it.

    Snap! :)
I do the same but my “standard” is a small Foo Dog carving.

Marine Ivory is also used, such as Walrus tusks for example.

Hi KSW. I have an antique lice comb made of ivory that I use similarly! :hilarious::hilarious:
