    Hi,
I think this is a tooth - anybody know what animal this would have belonged to? It is 2 1/2" long.
    Any information appreciated. DSC05915.jpg DSC05922.jpg DSC05919.jpg
    thanks for looking!

thank MOS, could be. I have a few whale teeth around here somewhere, will have to dig them out and see if they look the same.

Don't rule out a walrus tusk fragment that was formed into some kind of tool by the Eskimos. Just a thought.

@GaleriaGila posted some walrus tusk pics - this one is just too cute! Thanks for posting that URL.

    Looks like an antler tip.

I think it has likely been shaped, from some sort of marine ivory, rather than being a tooth in natural shape.
Not sure for what purpose though.

With the hole in it - seems like a tool to pass large sized thread or small rope through some kind of animal skins or material for making tarps or tents or something big like that, hence probably used the rounded end to push with their hands for better comfort, or wore that way from use. After all it is pretty small, so could've been used as a sewing needle.

Or stringing up animal hydes (I don't know if that is the right spelling) for them to dry -

Thanks for all the replies folks:)
Yes, seems straight for a whale tooth.
Interesting that maybe a tool of some sort Rayo56 - I thought it was a pendant. Will have to look and see what I can find.

Doesn't look very toothy. More like bone. I thought it looked like a little pestle.

Terry, I had that very thought... grinding stuff... either in a bowl, or a hollow of a stone.

    2 1/2 inches isn't very long for a tool.
Mightn't it just be part of a necklace?

Looks like it could be carved bone, perhaps part of a carved bone necklace.
