I didn’t even think “military” till I looked under the top cover and read the instructions. Definitely US military, ca. 1950’s? I bought it to store nuts, bolts, washers, capscrews. For scale, the larger drawer fronts are about one foot square. I’m sure all the soldiers who used it followed the instructions and did NOT use the top for a workbench (yah right!). The outside has obviously been repainted.

Not sure it's military. There's usually some indication of actual branch of service or Government ownership. Could be from any large company - GE, Raytheon, etc.

Could be. The sentence about the locking bars is interesting, seems to indicate this chest was part of a truck.

Dunno ifn this link works or not but may show some early Army repair trucks. Think my chest was too late for inclusion in this book but you can well envision the chest in a truck whose mission is similar to those listed.

I think the ID of this is printed on this painted-over label. Might try some paint remover or a light steel-wooling. Anyway it could be the “Cabinet, Spare Parts, Type 1, M1940” described in WWII manuals as part of certain 2 1/2-ton trucks. But in any case I’ve now repurposed it as a fastener container for stuff we don’t have room for in the more accessible bin racks.

I proved to myself that painted-over signs or stickers can sometimes be exposed using fine steel wool. But the nomenclature I sought wasn’t there. Instead there was a bumper-sticker for FM radio station WBZZ B94 in Pittsburgh. The details of the graphics/text mean the sticker was printed sometime between 1981 (Station started broadcasting) and about 2004 when they dropped the “B94.” So the search for further evidence of a military background continues..
